The Short Version

SpellType suggestions run locally on your Mac. SpellType does not ask for Screen Recording permission, does not send your writing to us for autocomplete, and can share optional daily product-usage counts. The standard app is free and does not require an account, onboarding email, subscription, or license key.

What SpellType Does

SpellType is a macOS app that provides private autocomplete suggestions while you write in supported apps without watching your screen.

Permissions

SpellType uses macOS Accessibility permission for autocomplete support in supported apps. SpellType does not ask for Screen Recording permission and does not take screenshots.

Data We Do Not Collect

Product Analytics

When analytics is enabled in Privacy settings, SpellType maintains one cumulative record per pseudonymous installation and UTC day. It records only whether eligible autocomplete writing occurred, how many new visible suggestion runs were physically shown, and how many of those shown runs received a successful Tab acceptance. App launch and idle login-item time do not count as active use. Rerenders, placement updates, and retries do not count as another shown suggestion, and one shown run can contribute at most one acceptance.

Product analytics does not include writing, prompts, suggestion text, suggestion history, nearby text, app names, bundle IDs, URLs, window titles, file names, exact location, timezone, emails, license keys, model names, app or device dimensions, diagnostic logs, or implementation details. Turning analytics off stops future sends and clears unsent local analytics snapshots.

After authenticating an analytics request, SpellType derives a pseudonymous analytics subject with a dedicated analytics-only keyed HMAC; the raw app install ID is not stored in the analytics table. A monotonic revision makes repeated or stale delivery idempotent, and a higher cumulative revision replaces the same install-day row. Product-analytics install-day rows older than 360 days are removed by a daily cleanup.

Website Marketing Analytics

The website keeps aggregate counts for page visits and actual download handoffs. The business and booking pages also count meaningful engagement, scroll depth, video milestones, call-to-action placement, opened FAQ category, booking-option handoffs, and email handoffs. These events use fixed categories and do not store writing, form content, keystrokes, screen content, clipboard content, or app window content.

Business-page acquisition is grouped by a fixed source and medium, normalized campaign ID, country-level location, and coarse device category. External referrers are classified when the request arrives, then the raw referrer domain and URL are discarded. SpellType does not store raw referrers, full URLs, IP addresses, or user-agent strings in website analytics.

For daily unique visitor counts, the website uses a first-party random browser token and stores only a per-day irreversible hash. The same-day hash can preserve acquisition categories from the original website landing into the business and booking pages, but it cannot identify a visitor across days. Hash records older than 360 days are removed by the same daily cleanup and are not used to build a cross-day visitor profile. The website does not store the raw token in analytics records. Browser Do Not Track and Global Privacy Control signals disable anonymous visit and business-engagement analytics, prevent a new analytics cookie, and expire an existing one. Actual download handoff totals still operate without a visitor hash.

A download is counted only when the website hands the configured app file to the browser. Marketing counter failures do not prevent download delivery.

Current downloads and retired download handoffs do not ask for, read, or store an email address.

Business Contact and Scheduling

If you email SpellType, we receive the email address, message, and any information you choose to include so we can respond. If you choose a scheduling handoff on the Business booking page, Cal.com processes the information you submit under its own privacy policy and shares the appointment details needed to arrange the call. The standard app does not require either action.

Earlier App and Commerce Records

Earlier versions of SpellType used onboarding email attribution, free-plan counters, paid checkout, subscriptions, and license keys. During the transition to the free unlimited app, older installed versions may continue using compatibility services for quota or entitlement status. Those requests do not include writing, autocomplete suggestions, prompts, nearby text, screen content, clipboard content, or personal writing.

The unlimited app removes any locally saved onboarding email and pending email-bearing onboarding-completion outbox left by an earlier build. Retired install-attribution requests do not create a new email record; an old completion request receives only a terminal acknowledgement so the earlier app can clear its local outbox.

Historical onboarding, entitlement, license-key hash, order, subscription, cancellation, and related support records may be retained for transaction reconciliation, customer support, fraud prevention, accounting, or legal obligations. SpellType does not use these records to impose a limit on the current free app. Historical onboarding completion snapshots follow the documented 360-day cleanup; operational purchase and support records may be retained separately as required.

Network Connections

SpellType suggestions keep running locally. Network access is limited to practical product needs such as:

Third-Party Services

SpellType uses third-party services only for product delivery, website hosting, updates, optional product analytics, business email and scheduling, and reconciliation of earlier commerce records. These services are not used to generate autocomplete suggestions from your writing.

Children's Privacy

SpellType is not directed to children under 13.
